Abstract
In the present study, three-dimensional distributions of interfacial stresses in adhesively bonded single-lap joints with composite adherends are predicted using the generalized multi-term extended Kantorovich method. Sets of coupled governing equilibrium equations are derived based on the three-dimensional elasticity theory using the principle of minimum total potential energy. Using the state-space approach, the governing equilibrium equations with partial derivatives are converted into sets of ordinary differential equations, which are solved iteratively in three dimensions. The method proposed in this study represents a new analytical framework for three-dimensional interlaminar stress analysis of thin and thick as well as narrow and wide adhesively bonded composite joints with common geometries. Interlaminar stress distributions in composite joints with general layup under various in-plane and out-of-plane loading conditions, including uniaxial tensile and shear loadings as well as bending and torsional moments were predicted. Results in comparison with the full layerwise theory and finite element simulation indicate that the proposed method can accurately estimate the stress distribution, particularly near the edges of the bonding region with high stress concentrations due to edge effects.
